Hem Lee, M. A. Medical Theatre: Using Theatre as a Supplement to Student Professional Formation [Poster Presentation]. AAMC GSA-CiM-OSR Professional Development Conference, Chicago, IL. (2020, March 27-29).

In the Summer of 2019, I created a 6-week course in Medical Theatre that I then taught to 4 students in the Fall. The course consisted of various aspects of theatre practice, including Improvisation, Movement and Impulse Work, Voice Training and Scene Study. Students were also required to see a work of theatre in the Philadelphia area, with the intention that art is often the pulse of a community. I plan to present an assessment and analysis of the 6-week class, along with individual reflections of the students who participated. I also plan to provide a framework professionals can use if they are interested in teaching the class at their respective institutions. Finally, I hope to use the feedback from the presentation to continue developing the class for an anticipated Fall 2021 session with a new cohort of students. My overarching goal is to advocate for increased teaching of soft skills through Theatre, skills that have been frequently identified as necessary to advancing the goals of addressing the nuance often involved in patient care.

Stated Goals of the Poster Presentation:

  • Reflect on the triumphs and challenges of teaching a 6-week course in Medical Theatre in Fall 2019
  • Evaluate how the structure and goals of a Medical Theatre program can aid in medical student growth
  • List up to 3 ways Medical Theatre can supplement a current Professional Formation syllabus
  • Create an initial framework for implementing Medical Theatre in the Medical curriculum
